MR03: PN Racing Soft Spring Sets

TJ's picture

From day one that I tested MR03 (which wasn't my car btw. Thanks Derrick V.! ) I noticed the front springs are stiff even after installing the softest spring on PN racing's spring set (MR3010). The stiff springs were making the front end of the car hop when it hits those bumps on the track. The front suspension weren't able to absorb the bumps on the track, thus making it hop/bounce off of them. Even those Atomic Soft Spring Set (MR3-015-S) that they came out with where even stiffer than PN's softest spring (red).

After few months of working on MR03 with what's available for us in the market inregards to the front suspension, Reflex Racing released their extra long kingpins which gives everyone the option to use MR02 springs installed on top of the upper arm.

By using this setup, the frontend can now be adjusted to softer setup using MR02 springs like PN purple, green,  etc...

Although the top spring works, some drivers still prefers kyosho's design. After a long wait from the aftermarket manufacturers, PN racing had finally released their PN "soft spring" set. Which comes in 2 pairs. I don't know if you guys are familiar with PN's spring rating but the 5 pcs Spring Set (MR3010) are rated as:

Red = 70g/mm
Green = 104g/mm
Purple = 139g/mm
White 189g/mm
Yellow = 270g/mm

While the new Soft Spring Sets (MR3010S) are rated as:

Orange = 32g/mm
Blue = 41g/mm

image below uses stock kyosho kingpin & soft orange springs by PN:

You got! It is that much softer! With this, I was able to absorb the bumps on the track just like the top spring conversion and was able to use PN's spring retainer which by the way, now comes in silver and in blue (MR3011WB)!

Track Time:
I built a friend of mine a car from ground up. This is the first time I'm using the PN soft springs set (orange). With the same setup (my car vs his that I built) just different front end (one top spring and one stock w/ PN orange soft spring). Both car were doing same lap times of, 10.7's at the current layout last week when I tested it. I'm not to say that this set up is better than the other. So far, I know both works the same but ofcourse, they have their differences like;

Top Spring Conversion
-variety of springs can be used (MR02 regular height and low down springs)
-too many parts rubbing against the kingpin

PN Racing's Soft Spring Set
-not too many parts rubbing on the kingpin
-only has two soft spring options (50g/mm and 60g/mm would be nice)

I know there's probably more that those differences but so far, I like them both.

I guess that is it for now. I hope you guys enjoy today's read. Now back to work! lol...

[Dee] Great Information, TJ! Thank you!  I have recently switched to the soft orange's on the Kyosho setup on your advice and they've made a world of difference for my suspension (like, I actually have suspension... lol!)  Like you said, since I'm running zero offset wheels in front, I may have to bump it up to the blues to reduce the amount of initial bite.  We'll see how that goes!
